How I can help

The metabolic system

Our modern lifestyles, with their high stress, bad dietary choices, environmental toxins, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals are causing an increase in chronic disease in general, but especially in the organs of the body that regulate metabolism, such as the pancreas, thyroid, and adrenal glands.

Adrenal fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a common collection of symptoms that I regularly see in my clinic. Typically it manifests as constant fatigue, an inability to cope with stress, anxiety, irritability, and low libido. It can also include sweet cravings, sensitivity to cold or heat, low back pain, and recurrent colds and flu. When we experience stress, our adrenal glands release adrenaline which primes the body to "fight or flight" - our heart rate goes up, pupils dilate, and blood flow is diverted from major organs to the brain and limbs. Fight or flight is meant to be a short-term response until stress dies down, but for some people, the adrenals start to produce cortisol, a hormone that prolongs the stress response. Over time, the adrenals can become overworked and depleted, cortisol production slows, and the person cannot cope with the same stress level. Herbal treatment involves:

  • Restoring the adrenal glands.

  • Reducing the effects of stress on the body.

  • Supporting immunity and protecting against cortisol resistance.

Sleep and quality exercise that is not too strenuous is vital for people with adrenal depletion, and diets high in processed carbohydrates are a critical contributor to the condition. I work with people to use herbal and dietary medicine to restore and nourish the adrenal glands and the whole body.

Thyroid disorders

Located below the voice box, the thyroid gland is like a thermostat of the body - it is sensitive to change and responds to our metabolic needs by dialing up or down as necessary. Thyroid diseases generally stem from long-term physiological stress putting too much demand on the thyroid over time. Therefore it is essential to consider why the disease has developed. I work with my clients to identify this and recommend appropriate lifestyle and diet habits to support thyroid health. There are different types of thyroid disease that cause the gland to overwork and become hyperactive (hyperthyroid) or underactive (hypothyroid). Herbal medicine can modulate the thyroid gland while nutrients such as iodine, selenium, vitamin d, zinc, and vitamin A are essential for thyroid function. I also work with my clients to recommend foods to avoid, such as cruciferous vegetables like Brocolli and Cabbage, which can suppress thyroid function. The thyroid gland has a complex effect on the body. Each person will show different signs and symptoms, so prescriptions are necessary following a consultation to consider your individual needs.
